Your first motorcycle holiday abroad — a practical guide

So you're thinking about your first motorcycle trip abroad. Maybe Spain, maybe Portugal, maybe somewhere along the Mediterranean. Good call. But the planning can feel overwhelming if you haven't done it before. Let's break it down. First question everyone asks: ride there or transport the bike? Honest answer — it depends on how much holiday time you have. If you've got three weeks, riding down through Austria and France can be part of the adventure. If you've got ten days or less, you'll burn half your holiday on motorways. That's where transport makes sense. You fly down in two hours, your bike arrives on a truck, and you spend all your time actually riding the good roads. Packing. Take less than you think. Seriously. One pair of riding gear, two t-shirts, socks and underwear for a week, a light jacket for evenings, swimwear, basic toiletries. If your hotel has a washing machine, you're golden. Overloading the bike is the number one mistake first-timers make. A heavy bike handles worse, brakes worse, and is less fun. Documents you'll need: motorcycle registration certificate (the green card format, not the big one), your driving licence (EU format is fine across all EU countries), insurance green card (get it from your insurer, usually free), and your passport or national ID. If you're going outside the EU — like Albania — passport is mandatory. Make copies of everything and keep them separate from originals. Timing matters more than people realise. Spain and Portugal are rideable March through November, but Andalusia in July-August hits 40°C regularly. That's not fun in full gear. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are perfect — warm enough for comfortable riding, cool enough that you actually enjoy it. Portugal's Atlantic coast stays milder year-round if heat isn't your thing.

What to prepare for

Basic rule: the less you pack, the better the ride. One set of riding gear, one casual outfit, swimwear, basic tools. Hotels in Spain will do your laundry for a few euros, so no need to haul a week's worth of clothes. Most importantly — enjoy it. Your first motorcycle holiday abroad is an experience you'll remember for years. We'll make sure your bike is there on time and in perfect shape.
